Photographing a Christening

As far as event photography goes, a christening can certainly be one of the more difficult events to photograph. Babies move around a lot, they cry, and they generally don’t do what a photographer needs them to do in order to capture a high quality, non-blurry image. However, it’s incredibly rewarding when you get it right and this kind of work will make an ideal addition to your portfolio. Here are some top tips for perfecting your christening photography:

  • Take as many photographs of the actual christening as you can. If it’s a baby or small child being christened, it’s likely they will get upset at some point during proceedings, so try to get at least one picture of them smiling.
  • Don’t neglect the other guests. Whilst the person being christened is the centre of attention, christenings are family affairs and people will want to have photographs of all their relatives on the day.
  • Practice makes perfect. Photograph as many events as you can before taking on any paid work to make sure that you’ve honed your skills.
  • Capture images of the general event setting. Photograph the buildings, the food and the entertainment. People will want to be able to remember these aspects of the event as well as the actual proceedings.
  • Take plenty of photographs of the person being christened with as many different guests as possible. People will enjoy looking back on these and they’ll have sentimental value for the whole family.
