Portrait vs Landscape

portraitversuslandscapeIn photography there cannot really be any claim to having “heated” disagreements. After all; you are just taking photographs of things and making them look nice. One aspect that has always drawn the occasional disagreement, though, is the orientation of your photographs. Not that kind of orientation you clown. That age old disagreement about portrait shots and landscape photographs. Yes their main use is clearly labelled in the name; but subtle understanding of their pros and cons can quickly lead to some more interesting dynamics in your photography.

People often talk about comedy living in the wide shot; allowing the actors room to perform and photography has much the same element to it. Confining a person to the portrait can only serve to limit them; but shots of groups really come to life in the wider angled pictures. However sometimes landscapes captured in the portrait angle can come alive as well; really capturing the verticality of breath taking scenes.
