Protecting Your Camera Properly

Whatever camera you have, it’s important to protect it in order to keep it working to its full potential. Most processes of doing so are very simple, and their importance should never be overlooked. Here are some of the ways in which you can keep your camera fully functioning and ready for use:

  1. Invest in a range of cases for different situations. This may prove somewhat costly, but it will be so beneficial when you’re taking your camera out and about. By having small cases which you can use to protect your camera whilst photographing, and larger ones which will keep all of your equipment together, you’re prepared for all eventualities. If you’re going abroad or are taking your camera hiking, you may want to use a hard case to achieve the best levels of protection.
  2. Keep a rain sleeve with you. These are available in one-time use versions if you don’t want to spend too much, and they’re invaluable if you get caught in an unexpected rainstorm.
  3. Use a lens hood. This will protect your lens from dirt and scratches, as well as improving your photography by preventing glare.
  4. Clean your lens properly. Use a dust blower to remove large particles of dust and dirt, and use a lens cleaning cloth to wipe the lens.
  5. Regulate the temperature of your camera. Exposing it to heat can damage the inner mechanism so it’s best to protect cameras from excessive sun. It’s also easy for condensation to form when taking a cold camera indoors, so allow it to acclimatise slowly by putting it in an airtight bag first.
